The CD "Mined Out Of Time" by performance artist Connie Beckley is a narrative journey which involves the discovery of an early 1900's wax cylinder recording, and the responses it provokes from the woman who has discovered it. Using the format of letter writing, Beckley, as the obsessed / possessed finder of this recording (the discovered recording is of the song 'Liza' which is the woman's name who finds it) reads her letters to her niece about the discovery and her reactions. The letters are handed down and the narrative continues from the point of view of the niece. It is only at the conclusion of the letter readings that we hear the recording of 'Liza' — and it becomes a haunting travel of memory, passion, imagination. As an artist who writes and stages full theatrical performances including dialogue, music, stage sets, characters, and effects, Beckley, in this seemingly simple process iof voice recording, manages to involve the listener in this narrative — her voice manner and control is astonishing. We are no longer the passive audience, but involved with her at each step of the journey.
