THE CD "IN CONVERSATION" BY IVAN KARP

Ivan Karp has been in the art world for over fifty years — initially as an art critic writing for the then 'new' newspaper, Village Voice, then as artist finder for Leo Castelli Gallery, before founding his own Gallery (the first ever in Soho, NYC), OK Harris Fine Arts. Karp was the first gallery representative to take an interest in the works of a young and unknown Andy Warhol, and was responsible for getting collectors interested in Warhol's works. In addition, with Castelli, Karp worked with and drew interest to Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, George Segal, Frank Stella, and many other breakthrough artists of the 1960's and 70's.

Growing up in Brooklyn and teaching himself how to see and think, Karp was at the forefront of the art scene in New York at the time when pop art was revolutionizing the art world, and saw the transition of iconic images by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman and others, becoming outpaced by paintings of Warhol, Lichtenstein, Johns, etc. As with music and pop culture of the 1960's it was a heady time for the art world, and Karp was in the center of it.

This CD, "In Conversation" is an extensive discussion with Ivan Karp about the art world and his role in it. He talks about Warhol, Lichtenstein, the other pop artists, as well as Franz Kline, Pollock, and the leading abstract expressionists of the period prior to the pop art movement. The contemporary art world and markets are also talked about, and with humor and total candor, Karp offers a view of art history from the inside — this is an invaluable CD for anyone interested in art and artists.
