THE CD "HILLSIDE MEDITATION" BY PATH SOONG

This CD recording is an original zen poem, read by the painter in a voice as startingly minimal and chant-like as her large white and black paintings.

The silences between her words are as integral a part of the poem as the words themselves, as in her paintings, where the spaces between her lines are as meaningful as the lines themselves, and Soong has transcended the recording process to bring us to a similar place where her paintings allow us to travel. The poem was written from 2002 — 2005, and Soong did several recording sessions until the one here on CD was what she was after. The recording is totally unaffected and not manipulated in any way — it was done in one long take, and the silences between words were purely instinctual and spontaneous, as are her visual works.

"The voice becomes an extension of artistic practice. A black and white lithograph by the painter Path Soong is accompanied by the artist's measured, monotone recitation of her poem "Hillside Meditation." (from NY Times Art Review, Karen Rosenberg.)
